Sons & Daughters - this gift (2008)

Glasgow's Sons and Daughters don't follow the indie pop formula made famous by their counterparts (Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura). Adele Bethel, David Gow, Scott Paterson, and Ailidh Lennon, who formed the group in 2001, compose a roughcast folk-rock sound similar to the likes of Smog and Cat Power. Prior to getting together, Bethel (guitar) and Gow (drums) toured and recorded with the Zephyrs and Arab Strap. Paterson (guitar/bass) chiefed March of Dimes for a short time while Lennon (mandolin/bass) studied classical composition at a University nearby. In 2002, Sons and Daughters self-released The Lovers EP. Love the Cup, an intriguing homage to Johnny Cash, followed a year later. In 2005, Sons and Daughters issued their studio full-length, The Repulsion Box. With the help of producer Bernard Butler, the band released their most fully-realised album to date in 2008, This Gift.

Harlem - Free Drugs (2008)

Acts such as The Stooges, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Daniel Johnston have influenced a modern day revival of garage, lo-fi, indie, punk stuff. Jay Reatard along with the Black Lips are the most well known of the current generation but it’s happening all over the place. There’s King Khan & The BBQ Show, Vivian Girls, No Age and much more. Well; good news! If you missed the train the first time around, there’s a relatively new group named Harlem out of Austin, Texas and they’re pickin’ up some serious speed.

Harlem uses aurally pleasing harmony (think Pixies) unlike many of their contemporaries over their finger-bleeding riffs and punch-you-in-the-nose drums. What I really love about them is their cassette-tape sound and their feel. It’s a hard thing to describe but sometimes you can just tell, even on a recording, that the band was just having an absurd amount of fun while in the studio. I picture a couple of dudes, perhaps armed with mustaches, drinking cheap beer and sleeping in random places. What’s more fun then that?

Their first LP, Free Drugs ;-), on Female Fantasy Records is short and sweet. From start to finish their loose sound and emphatic singing continues growing on you. The louder the better with this band so get your headphones out ladies and gentlemen and crank that shit UP!!

Caesars - Strawberry Weed (2008)

Alex Chilton - A Man Called Destruction (1995)

In a business that reinvents itself at every turn, Alex Chilton has managed to survive for three decades with a three-fold career as well -- his early recordings with the Box Tops, the three albums he did with Big Star in the mid-'70s and the spate of cool, but chaotic, solo albums he's recorded since then. To some, he's a classic hit-maker from the '60s. To others, he's a genius British-style pop musician and songwriter. To yet another audience, he's a doomed and despairing artist who spent several years battling the bottle, delivering anarchistic records and performances while thumbing his nose at all pretenses of stardom, a quirky iconoclast whose influence has spawned the likes of the Replacements and Teenage Fanclub.

The Tandooris - Walking Blind (2003)

Bubblegum - Where is Matthew Smith? (2008)

Scout Niblett - Kidnapped by Neptune (2005)

You Am I - hi fi way (1996)

It's the '60s again, again, again, and there are echoes of all kinds in this reissue of You Am I's 1994 set (originally out on Ra Records.) A cute outing that throws in thumpy drums, crunchy guitars and delightfully whiny Mellotron string noises along the way.
